Apartment owners understand that if you have a true entryway, no matter the size, it means you do what you can to make the most out of the space. For design-lovers, that might mean taking the opportunity to make a statement with wallpaper or flooring. For homeowners in need of more storage, maybe they’d prefer a revamped custom closet with a designated spot for everything. See how these Sweeten renovators turned their entryways into welcoming and functional spaces.
Sunghee and Joseph had to maximize their 44-square-foot kitchen as much as possible, which meant moving their refrigerator (that took up a quarter of the space) into the entryway. Their architect came up with a storage wall that hosts the integrated refrigerator, a microwave, and cabinets for shoes and cleaning supplies. He turned the foyer into a multi-functional area that makes small-space living much more organized.
There were many moving pieces of Zoe and Arvid’s apartment combination renovation. One included their reimagined foyer. They took advantage of a structural column and built a hidden closet for shoes (they’re a shoes-off household). On the other side, they created an open dining space with a partition structure that artfully hides an immovable gas riser.
Instead of keeping their long, narrow hallway, Sheilaja and Sergio decided to open it up and remove two closets. This newfound space allowed for a dining room and a wall of bookshelves instead. What they lost in storage, they made up for in the kitchen, plus they gained a much more welcoming and utilitarian entryway.
An entryway doesn’t necessarily have to be a multipurpose space to make an impact. Barbra and Sean let their foyer set the tone for the rest of their colorful home with bold, geometric wallpaper. They used the same pattern behind the desk niche in the kitchen for continuity.
Monique moved from an apartment to a row house, so she was particularly excited to create a fun and welcoming entryway. She chose handmade cement tiles for a wow-effect as soon as friends and family walk in the door. For some visual interest on the walls, she opted for a textured wallpaper.
When you walk in the door of architects Brett and Terri’s home, you can see all the way through to the living area. Plus, the dining area is right next to the door. To better connect the spaces, while also establishing a sense of separation, their contractor’s millworker designed a double-sided built-in bookcase.
Laura and Randy’s entryway was surrounded by closets on either side which was great for storage but made the space look narrow. They removed a set on one wall, and created a larger walk-in on the other. Design-wise, they use a geometric wallpaper that covers the space from floor to ceiling.
